Sun Setting over West Tokyo - Time Lapse

View of the sun setting over Tokyo, with some skyscraper construction in the foreground. Watch for the brief hint of Mt Fuji - you can see the sharp outline of its left side as the sun sets behind it. Taken with my SLR with an automatic shutter release timer again, this time with a much shorter interval of 7~8s. (Shutter speed was fixed at 50% of interval.) This seems to slow things down to a better speed than my previous video. This was a bit of an experiment with the dramatic light change of sunrise/sunset. There are some great videos of the day-night transition by samtk01 that have a nice, smooth transition. I tried to get this by creating a "poor man's" variable ND by combining a linear polarizing filter with a circular polarising filter, and adjusting it by hand as it started to get dark. As you can see, this didn't work out so well, because all the manual adjustments causes a lot of flicker. (Actually, I edited the worst bits out.) The camera also added a lot of flicker, as it couldn't seem to decide what the best aperture would be, so it changed a lot from one shot to the next. Advice on the forums recommends either using all-manual camera settings, or letting the camera have control of both aperture and shutter speed... hmmm, not sure what that would do the smoothness of the motion. I might give that a try tomorrow. Another important change I made this time was to set the camera to save the maximum size (resolution) photos. The benefit of this is that I can ...
